Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros.

This will be my review of an old game: Super Mario Bros.

Graphics 9/10: The graphics for the 1980’s were revolutionary using multiple sprites
as one character allowed Mario/Luigi to have more than 8 colors. This
was common in Nintendo’s later games. Although this was not Mario’s
first game, it was the first time he had flesh colored skin and an
actual jump by moving his legs.

Gameplay 10/10: What else could possibly be said about the game that everybody is familiar with? It has a fresh design from the boring linear Atarigames. It has a unique plot, an actual plot and there is multiple
power-ups which create a sense of strategy.

Sound and Music 10/10: The music is catchy and will stick in your head for the rest of your life. Anybody who played the game can remember the opening theme song from World 1-1. The theme music for the castle levels created a sense of suspense and a kid friendly fear factor. As for the sound effects they created a unique feeling of satisfaction when a power-up was obtained or grabbing a coin. The sound bite for a mushroom power-up is easily recognizable for any gamer or even somebody who has never played a video game before.

Story 9/10: The story may be a classic, but it is far from original. The concept of a commoner saving a princess is nothing new to the entertainment world. Even old Shakespeare plays had stories about a street rat rescuing a rich and beautiful princess. However, the story does take on unique elements about Mario's super powers from magic mushrooms (a reference to LSD?) and the villain being a giant turtle with spikes on his back.

Replay Value 10/10: People are still playing the game over 30 years later, people who have already beaten the game multiple times. This game even had a New Game+ where the game could be started over with more lives and a level selection. I can say without hyperbole that in a thousand years there will be cockroaches and Super Mario. The fact that Nintendo has to keep re-releasing the original version on multiple systems and even create a "Nintendo Mini" is proof that the game will be on Earth forever. Maybe we should even blast this game into space so that the three boobed aliens can enjoy it.

Originality 8/10: Some of the elements of the game have been done before. Atari had the Pitfall game which was basically a platformer without the sound effects and cute visuals. Some people might not be aware that Mario was already in a game before this when he was known as Jump Man during his days battling Donkey Kong. Mario's first game was already a damsel in distress platform style arcade. Literally a platform game because he had to jump from platform to platform. But that doesn't mean this game isn't original at all. The graphics, sounds, power-ups, gameplay and enemies are iconic and very original in there own way. I just wanted to make clear that Super Mario Bros. isn't %100 original.

Multiplayer 5/10: Like I said in my first post; I will be rating the multiplayer of each game based on how little multiplayer there is in a game because I think the concept of playing with friends sucks. I do have unpleasant memories of taking turns with my friends playing back and forth with Luigi because Super Mario Bros. just had to include a multiplayer feature. In my opinion: it's my game, I paid for it and I shouldn't have to share! Now that I'm done with my tantrum I will admit that Super Mario did have a good multiplayer function for people that enjoy the whole "sharing" thing.
