Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos

Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos

So far I've only written about games I enjoyed, but now it's time to look at some video games that were unpleasant or just plain suck.
  • Graphics 5/10
Even by Super Nintendo standards these graphics were of poor quality. They had the technology to use a 16 bit machine, but the sprites look more like the NES days. There are some issues with clipping and the characters just don't seem life like or animated. There's also a problem with discerning what some of the items are supposed to be: are the pick-ups supposed to be cheese or coins? What type of enemy is that?
  • Gameplay 3/10:

The controls were clunky, the mechanics didn't make sense and the entire game extremley repetitive. The objective was exactly the same in each level: release some Mexican stereotype mice from their cages. Then there was the infuriating boss battles with no direction about how to defeat your enemy. Many times I was confused about how the boss cat died because it just didn't make sense. The concept of having a timer in each level felt like a cheap and pointless challenge to add to the game. There's no reason to have a time limit in a Super Nintendo game.
  • Sound and Music 7/10:
The music was decent. At least the sound track sounded like something you would hear from a Speedy Gonzales cartoon. It was a very Mexican sound track with some Looney Tunes style tracks in the overworld map. However, the sound effects were hit or miss. Some sounded reasonable, yet others sounded like nails on a chalkboard. It was more pleasant to play the game with the sound off in certain areas because the sound made by enemies bouncing along was like pissing in my ear.
  • Story 8/10:
This is how I got tricked into thinking this was a good game as a kid: the story was cute and drew me in with how simplistic it is. It may not be original, but it is definitely something every child who watches cartoons would enjoy. There was nothing offensive, beyond the Mexican stereotypes and it seemed exactly like something Sylvester would have done to Speedy.
  • Replay Value 1/10:
There's absolutely no reason to replay this game. You could try to reach for a higher score, but every other video game offered that feature, so why bother? Beating the game the first time was frustrating and I was glad to finally be done with it for good. And the glitches and game breaking freezes make me wonder why I played this again in the first place.
  • Originality 0/10:
Every single thing about this game had already been done before. It's nothing more than a Sonic clone without the awesome speed and badass robots. The kicking of opponents also seems like a Bubsy rip-off, but maybe they got that from an actual Speedy Gonzales episode. I also didn't see the point of having people select where to go in an overhead map, because they was only one choice: go forward.
  • Multiplayer 10/10:
Hey look at that! They did something right when they didn't add a multiplayer feature. It would be pretty cruel to invite your friends over to play SNES and then disappoint them with this abomination. I suppose if you come home drunk with a stripper you could blow her mind by how you can play this game without passing out.
